模拟恐怖借用地方电视、教学带、紧急广播与家庭录像的权威，再让劣化回放揭示一种隐含的机构威胁。它兴起于 2000 年代末，借 1970–1990 年代的广播设计语言立身。跟踪失灵与磁带噪点之所以重要，是因为它们打断平静的旁白、例行监控或公共服务图形，而不是充当通用的复古滤镜。
